What’s the difference between affirmative action and slavery, fundamentally? Both are rooted in the idea that whites are better than people of color. With slavery, the mindset was that people of color were less than human – that they didn’t deserve the same rights afforded to whites. Because whites were smarter, it was their evolutionary right to rule. With affirmative action, the idea has shifted – but only slightly. Whites are still better and smarter than those of color, and as such, whites should acquiesce to their requests as lesser beings.
I’m mainly Mexican and Scottish. And you know what? I want equality! I want to succeed or fail on my own merits. I don’t need help. It’s been said many times before, but the only way that, as a culture, we can stop discriminating on the basis of race, is to simply stop. As Nancy Reagan would put it, just say no. If race is taken into account when making a decision, then someone is being discriminated against. Stop putting it on job applications. Stop putting it on loan applications. Stop putting it on mortgage applications, and take into account what really matters. Can you do the job? Can you pay for the house? The apartment? The car?
I want financial aid to go to those who truly need it, whatever their color, not to those who have been stuck with the label, “historically disadvantaged”, by these white, bourgeois liberals.
